People in motion Workshop
With Andrew James
Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July 10am -5pm
This workshop is about drawing people without getting caught up in anatomy and detail. You’ll learn to loosen up and develop techniques for drawing people “in the wild”, especially when they are moving.
The first day is a crash course in drawing faces and bodies, and on the second day we put it into practice, drawing people on location and live musicians back in the studio.
Materials
- Pen (I use and recommend Tombow Fudenosuke frim tip, but any pen will do.)
- Grey marker – I like the double-ended Faber-Castell Pitt pens.
A few coloured markers or coloured pencils.
Cheap sketchbook (Gordon Harris A4 visual diary is ideal)
- Any other drawing materials that you like to use.
- Comfortable shoes for the second day – be prepared to draw standing up.
Andrew James is a Wellington-based sketchbook artist and educator and a founding member of Urban Sketchers Wellington. His workshops present simple and practical ideas delivered with enthusiasm and humour.

Learn many techniques including wet into wet, colour mixing, tonal range, one point perspective and figures in a landscape. This course is suitable for watercolour beginners and those developing their skills.
